Joana Sdik knew she wanted to be a dentist from a young age. In 2016, she graduated from the Karolinska Institute with a degree in dentistry. She was drawn to the craftsmanship, precision, and the opportunity to help patients. Today, she runs her own practice, a place where knowledge, care, and technology meet.
"I have always loved the craftsmanship. As a dentist, it's not just about fixing teeth, it's about meeting the whole person and making them healthy and beautiful, creating security, educating, and giving the patient a smile they feel proud of," says Joana.
The road to owning her own practice has been full of lessons. After working in hospitals with surgery for a while in both Sweden and Denmark, Joana gained valuable experience in handling emergency situations, which gave her the courage to start her own practice as a young dentist. "That experience has made me dare to take the step to invest and become an entrepreneur early in my career," she says.
The journey has also involved a rapid learning curve outside the dental chair. "You go to school for five years to learn how to diagnose, drill, and cut, but when I rebuilt the practice, I also had to learn how a compressor works and how to handle all the technology needed to keep everything running behind the scenes." In addition to the technical aspects, entrepreneurship itself has been a new world. "Finance and business were completely new to me, but after three years, it has stabilized."

An important investment for the clinic has been the move towards digitalization. With the help of financing, Joana was able to purchase a digital scanner that takes several thousand images per second and creates a three-dimensional digital model of the patient's teeth and mouth. "Previously, the analog process took longer. Now it takes about three minutes to scan the entire bite – upper jaw, lower jaw, and bite. This makes certain treatments both faster and more precise. In addition, it is a great advantage that the patient can follow along and see what I am doing on a screen," she explains. The response from patients has been very positive.
She believes the future of dental care will be heavily influenced by digitalization and AI. "I think we will have even smoother workflows, perhaps with the help of AI in record-keeping, which takes up a lot of time today. I also want to grow and develop the business; you have to dare to think big."
Currently, Joana runs a practice in central Stockholm with two treatment rooms, but her vision is bigger. "As a business owner, it's a challenge to know when the right time is to grow. There are many pieces that need to fall into place, including staff, purchasing, and maintenance; it's all part of the journey. It's a bit like taking care of a small baby," she says with a smile.
