From an early age, Joana Sdik knew she wanted to become a dentist. In 2016, she earned her dental degree from Karolinska Institutet. It was the craftsmanship, precision, and opportunity to help patients that drew her to the profession. Today, she runs her own practice — a place where knowledge, care, and technology come together.
“I’ve always loved the craftsmanship. Being a dentist isn’t just about fixing teeth — it’s about seeing the whole person, restoring health and beauty, creating trust, educating, and giving patients a smile they can be proud of,” Joana explains.
The road to running her own clinic has been filled with lessons. After working in hospital surgery departments in both Sweden and Denmark, Joana gained valuable experience in handling emergency situations — something that gave her the confidence to start her own business as a young dentist. “That experience gave me the courage to invest and become self-employed early in my career,” she says.
The journey has also come with a steep learning curve beyond the dental chair. “You spend five years in school learning to diagnose, drill, and cut — but when I renovated my clinic, I also had to learn how a compressor works and how to manage all the technology needed to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.”Beyond the technical aspects, running a business was a completely new world. “Finance and business operations were totally new to me, but after three years it’s finally stabilized.”
A key investment for the clinic has been the step towards digitalisation. With the help of financing, Joana was able to purchase a digital scanner that captures thousands of images per second and creates a three-dimensional digital model of the patient’s teeth and mouth. “The analog process used to take much longer. Now it takes about three minutes to scan the entire bite — upper jaw, lower jaw, and occlusion. This makes certain treatments both faster and more precise. It’s also a big advantage that the patient can follow along on the screen and see what I’m doing,” she explains. The response from patients has been overwhelmingly positive.
Joana sees the future of dentistry as being strongly shaped by digitalisation and AI. “I think we’ll soon have even smoother workflows — perhaps with AI assisting in record-keeping, which takes a lot of time today. Personally, I also want to grow and develop the business — you have to dare to think big.”
Currently, Joana runs a practice in central Stockholm with two treatment rooms, but her vision is much larger. “As an entrepreneur, it’s always a challenge to know when the right time is to expand. There are so many elements that need to come together — staff, equipment, maintenance — but it’s all part of the journey. It’s a bit like taking care of a little baby,” she says with a smile.
